Dr. Hannenberg served as the 74th president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in 2010. ASA is an organization of 46,000 members with offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C. He began his volunteerism with ASA as a delegate from Massachusetts in 1987 and has held numerous positions since then. In 2004, ASA created a new officer position, the Vice President for Professional Affairs with oversight of activities in governmental affairs, economics, practice management and professional standards. Dr. Hannenberg was the first individual elected to this position which he held for four years. He has an extensive background in payment issues, having been chair of the ASA Committee on Economics and ASA’s representative to AMA’s Medicare Relative Value Update Committee for six years. He led ASA’s efforts to create performance measures for Medicare’s physician quality program and to establish the Anesthesia Quality Institute and its National Anesthesia Clincal Outcomes Registry. In the area of humanitarian outreach, he is the founder of the ASA Charitable Foundation. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research, the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the ASA Charitable Foundation and the Anesthesia Quality Institute. He is an senior examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology and remains active in the Massachusetts Society of Anesthesiologists and at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in suburban Boston, where he has practiced for almost twenty years. Dr. Hannenberg is Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.
