The CSPS endorses all measures to reduce the risk of fire in the perioperative period. These measures include, but are not limited to, use of the lowest possible inspired oxygen concentration in proximity to an ignition source, flame retardant drapes, and the safe use of antiseptic skin preparation solutions, electrocautery, and laser devices. In 2015, The FDA asked CSPS to take over ownership of the FDA's Preventing Surgical Fires Initiative and continue providing resources on preventing surgical fires.

Surgical fires are preventable medical errors. To reduce the risk of fires, many healthcare organizations have developed tools, implemented strategies, and conducted education and outreach efforts. Yet there is more that can be done.  For additional information and resources click here now.
